BIRDWATCHING

The Partial Nature Reserve of the estuary Villaviciosa is located approximately 40 kilometres from the hotel.

It is an ecosystem of marsh that has become an important wintering and resting area for migratory birds in Europe, making it the ideal place for "Birdwatching".

Among the faunal species, wintering and migrating birds are the most important, being possible to observe over 150 species.

The best represented group is the waders, all long-legged wading birds, which are nurtured by the lot of animals on the plains of mud left uncovered in the low waters. The oystercatcher and others are warder birds from rocky substrates, most frequently at the mouth of the estuary.

On the beaches of Rodiles and Missiegu we can observe terns, gulls, loons and other seabirds that arrive at the coast during the winter and go into the estuary by "Puntal" channel. We must not forget the 'Porreos', lands won to the marsh, with abundant ponds and drainage channels where abundant Anatidae of several species, the lapwing and plovers, plus a variety of small birds of reeds.

Also are living here herons, little herons and egrets that make raids upstream. The big cormorants are often for the whole basin fishing or spreading its wings in the sun.

The estuary Villaviciosa hosts the only fisher eagle in Asturias is known at present.
